The year ahead for all the Reserves in the SA Army Artillery Formation promises to be packed with opportunities and challenges. Central to this will be Transvaal Horse Artillery (THA) challenge to maintain and improve our combat readiness and capacity to perform and continue to provide quality resources to the GOC of the South African Army Artillery Formation.
Our program of Continuation Training which we embarked on over four years ago has borne some fruit but we have to optimise our outputs and ensure that we improve on how we conduct and record the training and also ensuring that we have tangible and auditable outputs.
Our main objective will be to provide a Battery minus of combat ready personnel for Exercise Saint Barbara which is scheduled for October 2013. The THA will provide the core of the GV6 Battery during this exercise as well as other Force Structure Elements (FSEs) for the Composite Reserve Regiment.
In addition we need to prepare personnel for the Medium Term where we are earmarked to deploy a rifle platoon together with the Vrystaatse Artillerie Regiment (VAR) to our nation’s borders. This deployment will give us another opportunity to prove our mettle and to serve our country. More details will be provided in the coming months.
I urge all members to continue giving their commitment and devotion to the Regiment as they have done over the past four years, so we may continue to be the premier regiment in the SA Army Artillery Reserves.
Gunners Greetings

During the month of January 2011 the Transvaal Horse Artillery were extended an invitation to visit Regiment Botha by their OC, Colonel AP Joubert. The weekend visits comprised of an informal get together with Regiment Botha officers and NCOs in the mess on the Friday evening. This was followed by an inter-regimental shooting competition on the Saturday morning with Regiment Botha emerging as the clear winners.
The rest of the weekend the hosts showed the THA members various sites in and around their home city of Barberton. THA members paid a visit to the Barberton MOTH club and shell hole, as well as the Barberton garden of remembrance and were treated to a trip up the nearby hills to soak in the amazing view of the surrounding area.
The OC of the THA, Major A Pestana said that the trip had proved to be extremely useful from several points of view, “The main goal of the visits to build on the current esprit d corps that we had established already, I can safely say that we were able to meet this and much more as we shared knowledge and expertise on the weekend and I am sure that all the THA members who were there will join me in extending heartfelt thanks to the OC of Regiment Botha and all his officers, NCOs and other members.”

The THA recently got into the spirit of Madiba’s birthday when a handful off members decided to visit the Alexandra Women for Peace initiative in Alexandra just outside Johannesburg. The Centre is home for orphans and disabled children as well as young and elderly women.
The THA members assisted the centre by engaging in various activities such as cooking soup for the chi9ldren or cleaning up the centre washing dishes and windows in an effort to brighten up the lives of the people at the centre.
